WEST Brewery, Bar & Restaurant, the first UK brewery to produce all of its beers in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, known as the German Purity Law, is unveiled today (11.06.08) as a sponsor of the Product Design Graduation Show at The Glasgow School of Art.

Speaking at WEST’s beer hall in the iconic Templeton Building at Glasgow Green, German brewery owner Petra Wetzel said, “One of our staff members, Seonaid Nimmo, who has been with us from the outset, is a product design student and, as she is set to graduate this year, we thought we would celebrate that fact by helping sponsor the Product Design Graduation Show at The Glasgow School of Art.”

Taking place on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th June, the show will feature a range of clever design solutions. Jennifer Kay, has designed Pyramid Route to Recovery, a communication tool and personal file for those receiving mental health support in the community. Marika Ukonaho has created Quite Frankly, a game which educates children and their parents on personal safety and Michael Johnson has created a fridge that helps make choices about which food to eat.

Gordon Hush, Head of Product Design at The Glasgow School of Art, said, “This year’s Product Design degree show proves that there is nowhere that designers cannot go or that design cannot be applied. Traditional product design focused upon the manufacture of objects, the stuff of everyday life, such as furniture, electrical appliances or the packaging of consumer goods.

“Contemporary product design, as practiced at GSA, has expanded beyond the design and manufacture of such products to consider the social and ecological context of design. Therefore, the emphasis is upon the people who use products and the experiences that products make available to their users. This means that in addition to a concern for form, function and materials, graduates of the Batchelor of Design and Masters in European Design degree programmes are designing with people and the environment in mind.”

WEST produces a full range of beers, from cool, crisp lagers, through to clean-tasting wheat beers and a full range of unique and seasonal styles. Its approach to food reflects its brewing ethos, taking the very best natural ingredients and preparing them purely and simply, incorporating the natural produce of Scotland with an individual perspective on German and European food styles.

WEST Brewery, Bar & Restaurant is open seven days a week, 11am till 11pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to midnight Friday and Saturday. Brewery tours are available by arrangement and free live jazz performances take place each Sunday afternoon.

Founded in 1845, The Glasgow School of Art is one of the oldest and few remaining independent Art Schools in the UK producing over 300 graduates each year. Visitors to the 2008 Degree Show at one of Europe’s leading specialist art schools can expect to view works of the highest creative standard. One of the largest degree shows in the United Kingdom, approximately 20,000 visitors, including international galleries and fine art collectors, will pour through the world-renowned campus to view the range of work on show.
