Macdonald to Become University Chancellor
14/08/2007
A former managing director of Scottish Television and chair of Scottish Media Group is to be installed as the next Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University.
Gus Macdonald, now also known as Rt Hon Lord Macdonald of Tradeston CBE, will succeed the late Magnus Magnusson who was Chancellor of the University from November five years ago until his death in January of this year.
Lord Macdonald said: “It is a great honour to be nominated as Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University as it makes an increasingly distinctive contribution to higher education in Scotland. I am particularly proud to follow once more in the footsteps of my old mentor on The Scotsman newspaper, Magnus Magnusson. GCU has huge ambition and I look forward to the challenge ahead.”
After working for The Scotsman, Macdonald spent eighteen years with Granada Television as a reporter, editor and then senior executive before returning to Glasgow in 1985. He became managing director of Scottish Television (now known as stv) in 1990 and, later, chair of the Scottish Media Group (now known as SMG).
In 1998, he was elevated to the House of Lords and held ministerial positions at the Scottish Office and the Department of Transport. After the 2001 General Election, he was appointed Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He stood down from the government four years ago and in the following year became an advisor to the Australian bank, Macquarie.
