Control Leads Independent Film Cast
24/10/2007
A biopic of a troubled musician leads the way among the films shortlisted for this year’s British Independent Film Awards.
Control, about Ian Curtis of the band, Joy Division, has received ten nominations, three ahead of And When Did You Last See Your Father? and four ahead Scots movie, Hallam Foe. Control was made by Anton Corbijin.
And in the Raindance section, a Scottish 'road movie' has made it to the shortlist. 'Inheritance' was directed by Charlie Bellevile and shot for just £5000, over eleven days, using eleven cast and crew. Sixty-two minutes long, it ranges from Edinburgh to Skye.
Raindance - a film festival, a training provider and now www.raindance.tv - set up BIFA. It describes itself as "dedicated to fostering and promoting independent film in the UK and around the world".
This is the tenth year of the awards, which will be announced at the end of next month.
Other films to receive multiple nominations include Eastern Promises, Brick Lane, Black Gold, It’s A Free World, Notes On A Scandal, Garbage Warrior Sunshine, Exhibit A and 28 Weeks Later.
BIFA have named Ray Winstone as the recipient of The Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor. Winstone, who is a three-time BIFA nominee, won Best Actor for Nil By Mouth at the very first awards in 1998.
Also this year, The Variety Award honours Daniel Craig for his contribution to bringing the international spotlight to the British film industry. Craig has also been nominated at BIFA three times and won Best Actor for his role in Some Voices.
Meanwhile, Dog Altogether - produced by Glasgow-based Sigma Films and starring Scots actor, Peter Mullan - gets a nod in the short film category.
