‘Probable Extinction’ Facing Scottish Press, Predicts Neil
12/02/2008
The Scottish press is heading for “probable extinction”, predicts the former chief executive and editor-in-chief at Scotsman Publications, Andrew Neil.
Reviewing the latest circulation figures in yesterday’s MediaGuardian, he writes: “On current trends, if Scotland ever did [gain independence and] divorce from the UK, it could end up the only independent country in the world without vibrant independent newspapers of its own; its citizens preferring instead the tartan editions of the newspapers of another country.”
And turning his attention to, specifically, The Scotsman and The Herald, he continues: “Once both titles regarded themselves as on a par with the best of Fleet Street, striving to cover Scottish, national and international agendas. During my time at the Scotsman Group, I insisted the editors provided extensive coverage of Westminster, the City, foreign affairs (we had our own correspondents in Washington and Kosovo) and culture - as well as all things Scottish. Today, both titles look more like the Yorkshire Post (also owned by [Scotsman owners]Johnston) than the Times or Telegraph - regional newspapers with only cursory, usually wire-service, coverage of events outside their region. Cutting costs has become the norm - the Scotsman recently banned the use of first-class stamps - and rolling programmes of redundancies seem never-ending.”

- "The days of people buying their newspapers is coming to an end with the almost instant access to instant news.
Free of charge is but a moment away.
Time to take a look at other ways of bringing in revenue me thinks."

Then again, he achieved a lot, personally as a journalist if not at the Scotsman as publisher. The editors of 2008's only career footnote will be complicity in the demise of great institutions such as The Herald and Scotsman."

They are just unwilling to finance a product that looks beyond the Holyrood soap opera and the dire bilge of Scottish affairs. The readers know it and that is why they pay up in fewer numbers than ever. The Herald and The Scotsman under their current management and editors are terrible papers who have lost their purpose and are fast becoming irrelevant. Unless they find talented replacements the papers will be unviable within a decade. End of."

Scotland doesn't need their lame attempts to foster national sentiment or identity - it's been around too long for that. However, whatever agenda these papers might have, they have one thing in common - they are very dull.
I'm off to set a fire with the Herald's Guide to Scottish Midges."
