Amnesty Issues Media Awards Invite

15/02/2008
Examples of journalism that have made a “significant contribution to the UK public’s greater awareness and understanding of human rights issues” are being invited by Amnesty International, for its 17th annual media awards.

This year’s awards, which operate at both a UK-wide and Scotland-wide levels, have been joined by two, new categories: international TV and radio and also New Media.

The list of categories now comprises:

- International TV and radio;
- New Media;
- Television documentary and docu-drama;
- Television news;
- Radio;
- National newspapers;
- Periodicals, two awards;
- Photo-journalism;
- Nations and regions: print or broadcast media in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the English regions;
- Gaby Rado Memorial Award: for an up-and-coming journalist who has been covering human rights stories for less than five years.

Last year, The Herald magazine’s Lucy Adams won the Nations and Regions prize.

This year, Amnesty will also be presenting its sixth, annual Scottish Prize - which all Scottish entrants to the above categories are automatically entered for. Not surprisingly, Adams won that too last year.

The closing date for entries is the 31st of next month.
