Sales Soar by Half for DC Thomson's Bratz

22/02/2008
A number of Scottish publications are showing increased average net circulations, according to the latest magazine sales figures.

And one of the highlights of the ABC’s consumer magazine figures - for the six months ending in December - is Dundee-based DC Thomson's Bratz, which soared by 48.7 per cent to 64,279 copies.

Earlier this week, allmediascotland highlighted a number of prominent home-produced magazine sales, and here we feature a round-up of the remainder.

Of course, not all publications return their sales figure to ABC.

Other figures from the Thomson publishing empire include The Beano (74,419), The BeanoMAX (51,431), The Dandy (28,552), Goodie Big Mag (28,552), and the Children’s Entertainment Package - Boys (154,400) and Girls (131,272).

However, sales of the company’s Scots Magazine dropped by 6.8 per cent, to 37,632, and the Weekly News fell ten per cent, to 70,576. Across its newspapers, magazines and comics  portfolio, DC Thomson now sells more than 200 million copies each year.

There was also good news at the Scottish Field where sales climbed by 4.7 per cent, to 14,106, but Newsquest’s Great Outdoors dropped by 5.8 per cent, to 10,705, and Homes & Interiors Scotland plunged 28.5 per cent, to 11,200.

The Times Education Supplement Scotland had a good year - up 17 per cent, to 7157. Locations Scotland was down  3.4 per cent, to 24,918.

On the motoring front, Auto Trader Scotland was down 9.2 per cent, to 15,077. Ad Trader Scotland (Wednesday) was down eleven per cent, to 12,267 and Ad Trader Scotland (Saturday) down six per cent to 9405. However, Ad Trader Edinburgh and Lothians climbed by 13.2 per cent, to 3693. Scotland in Trust, the National Trust for Scotland’s magazine, showed a 4.9 per cent increase, to 179,082 copies.

  • "You report that Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine’s circulation ‘plunged 28.5 per cent’ to 11,200. This drop was due to the publisher no longer claiming bulk sales within its ABC figure. In actual fact, on closer analysis Homes & Interiors Scotland saw actively purchased sales rise from 9859 (Jan-Jun 2006) to 10,111 (Jan-Jun 2007) a healthy 2.5% growth year on year. Copies purchased via retail sales and subscriptions now make up 95% of the total circulation figure, 30% greater than the previous year’s 64.9%."

  • "How about this less tedious story from Holy Moly: " A few friends of mine went to the Babyshambles gig in Glasgow last week. The next day they hatched a plot to get a photo into the Scottish Sun. They got a girl, my mate's cousin, to pull her pants down and another mate spanked her bum until it went all pink. They took a camera photo picture of this, then Photoshopped Pete Doherty's head onto it and anonymously sent it into the Scottish Sun, who printed it on page 23 of their next (last Friday's) edition of the paper, claiming it to be an authentic tattoo!""
