Scottish Press Awards Shortlist Announced

07/03/2008
As sent as breaking news to e-newsletter subscribers last night, Scotland on Sunday newspaper has received the most nominations for this year’s Scottish Press Awards - the shortlist for which have just been released.

The awards - taking place next month, in Glasgow - also sees The Scotsman and The Herald both feature strongly, each on 12 nominations. But SoS pips them with 13.

This is the 29th year of the awards, which are organised by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society. The winners across 22 categories will be announced on the 17th of next month. The host is TV presenter, Fiona Armstrong.

Controversy accompanied the invite for this year’s entries when it was realised that some journalists would be prevented from entering categories such as Feature Writer, and also Arts and Entertainment Writer, for no other reason than they work for their newspaper’s magazine.

Magazine Writer of the Year is a new category, as is Sports Scoop.

Says George Reid, chair of the judging panel: “Scotland is one of the most competitive media markets in the world. That gives real importance to the Scottish Press Awards. This year’s entrants again demonstrate the incisive reporting, originality of thought and quality of writing which edge them ahead of the field.”

There were over 350 entries this year, with Journalist Team of Year, News Photographer of the Year and Cartoonist of the Year attracting a record number of entries.

The breakdown of nominations reads: Sunday Herald 8, Scotsman 12, Daily Record 8, Scotland on Sunday 13, Scottish Sun 9, The Herald 12, Scottish Mail on Sunday 1, Sunday Mail 6, Business7 1, Sunday Times Scotland 6, Scottish Daily Mail 6, Holyrood magazine 2, Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser 2, Evening Express 2, Evening Times 1, Courier 1, Ayrshire Post 2, Dumfries & Galloway Standard 1, Falkirk Herald 1, West Highland Free Press 1, Edinburgh Evening News 1, Press & Journal 1, Freelance 2, An Gaidheal Ur 1 and Scottish News of the World 1. Express Newspapers decline to enter.
