Sunday Herald in 'Hot Water' Over Huddle Comment
17/04/2008
The Sunday Herald editor is understood to have been written to by Celtic football club following what is being described as an "inappropriate" reference to supporters in last weekend's edition.
The club is said to have been inundated by complaints in response to an article containing the line, “some fans would probably rather have a bead-rattling Hoopy the Huddle Hound in the dug-out.” It appeared in an article about the sentiments of some fans towards manager, Gordon Strachan.
A statement on www.celticfc.net says: "As a club open to all since its formation in 1888, regardless of race or religion, this disparaging characterisation of Celtic supporters is extremely disappointing and offensive.
"The reference is completely inappropriate, and one which has naturally caused great concern amongst our supporters.
"Clearly, with the level of feeling among our supporters being so high with regards to this issue, the club felt it important to address this issue with the newspaper concerned."

As 'bead-rattler' myself, I have no objection to somebody suggesting this, were it true, the problem is, it isn't. I'm speaking for the majority here, not the lunatics who think transubstantiation is haulage firm."

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your comment about the speed at which news works.
However, as Broken Record points out, it is a disingenuous headline, as the story is not about a (or the) 'Huddle comment'. The Sunday Herald is in 'hot water' over a comment one of its writers made, using in a respected (til now) Sunday newspaper, a comment which is derogatory towards Roman Catholics. That is why Celtic FC issued a statement, that is why the freelancer has been fired. Not over the use of the word 'Huddle', which I believe your headline implies. Had your headline been 'Sunday Herald in hot water over comment', I could have accepted. 'Over Huddle comment' is simply not true.
I apologise if this appears picky, as the real issue is a sectarian term used as common parlance in a Scottish newspaper. I hope Sunday's apology will put an end to the matter."

The reason AMS didn't is that AMS is not a full-time operation, so somebody is not around all of the time. Wish that we were. Tell your friends to buy our services. Webmaster."

Change it to gain yourself some creddibility back, and while you're at it, update the article with the response from the Sunday Herald, outlined on the Celtic FC website:
CELTIC Football Club yesterday met with the Sunday Herald newspaper in relation to the recent article containing the line, 'some fans would probably rather have a bead-rattling Hoopy the Huddle Hound in the dug-out.'
During a constructive meeting with regard to this issue, the Sunday Herald has informed the club of the following:
The individual in question will no longer write a column for the Sunday Herald.
The newspaper will be printing a full unreserved apology in this Sunday's edition.
The newspaper will be responding directly and individually to all those people who have complained by letter or e-mail to the Sunday Herald on this matter."

One Scotland, Many Cultures?
This sort of drivel getting into the pages of a so-called quality newspaper just goes to show what sort of country Scotland actually is.
A senior production executive must have decided that this phrase was acceptable to let it appear in print.
It's not, and the Sunday Herald sports desk are a disgrace if any one of them think it is."
