Sunday Post to Print in Madrid
02/05/2008
The Sunday Post is to be printed in Madrid from this weekend in a bid to boost its current overseas sales of just over 500 copies.
The investment by the DC Thomson-owned newspaper means that people living in, or visiting, the Spanish costas, Balearic Islands, the Algarve and Tenerife, will be able to buy a copy every Sunday morning.
In the ABC circulation figures for March, the Sunday Post’s overseas sale was 536 copies. This compares to 38 copies for Scotland on Sunday and six for the Sunday Herald.
But the paper remains a UK newspaper phenomenon, in that it sells so many copies outside its home territory of Scotland.
In its March ABC of 400,134, while 272,424 copies were sold in Scotland, some 127,174 sales were in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
A Sunday Post spokesman said: “The paper will be printed in Madrid before being transported to large retailers and independent newsagents and other countries in time for people to enjoy it with their continental breakfast. For two Euros and 20 cents, readers will enjoy a taste of home while lapping up the flavours of abroad.”
Meanwhile, the Sunday Mail has been markedly increasing its overseas presence. In March, it had an average sale of 6403 copies - more than double the 2695 copies of twelve months previously.
