Edinburgh Film Fest Kicks off with Strong Scottish Presence

18/06/2008
The Edinburgh International Film Festival opens today, with a strong presence from Scotland, including four feature films, plus numerous short films and documentaries.

The feature films are Stone of Destiny, Summer, The New Ten Commandments and Trouble Sleeping.

Stone of Destiny is about the group of Scottish students who stole the Stone of Scone, from Westminster Abbey and returned it to Scotland. The film is to be distributed UK-wide thanks to a deal secured with Odeon Sky and it was made partly due to half a million pound’s worth of funding from Scottish Screen.

Trouble Sleeping - a co-production between Glasgow production company, Makar Productions, and Theatre Workshop in Edinburgh - is a drama about refugees in Edinburgh. The film was made partly with funds from BBC Scotland.

Summer, made by Sixteen Films, is directed by award-winning Scot, Kenny Glennan, and stars actor, Robert Carlyle.

The New Ten Commandments is a feature documentary commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. EIFF patron, Tilda Swinton, is joined by novelist, Irvine Welsh, and artist, Douglas Gordon, among a galaxy of directors, each with a story to tell. It was overseen by Scottish documentary maker, Nick Higgins, of Lansdowne Productions.
