Two Scoops of Oops

25/07/2008
Oops 1. What was this? The guardians of one of the country’s most popular sports naming a part of their national stadium after a sportswriter with the local paper? And why not a local newspaper sportswriter? Radical.

Except that the external PR company who sent out details to the media about last night’s football friendly between Barcelona and Hibernian - being played at rugby’s Murrayfield Stadium - had got it slightly wrong.

The media were not invited to make their way to the ‘Bill Lothian Suite’ - he of the Edinburgh Evening News - but the Bill McLaren Suite - he of the legendary match commentaries for the BBC.

Barcelona scraped through, 6-0.

Oops 2. A journalist reader writes: “It’s ten to two in the morning, and as I write, a recount is going on in the Glasgow East by-election. I have unofficial, but reliable, word that the SNP have won by 354 votes. So it was great fun, while watching the BBC's coverage, when one of the presenters held up a flier for Labour candidate, Margaret Curran, while talking about her campaign. Clearly written in ink in the corner of the flier was the number, 354. Guess that was the only bit of paper he had to hand when he got word of the unofficial result, and then he forgot how he'd used it.”
