NUJ Sell-off Plans Move a Step Closer
29/07/2008
The National Union of Journalists is one step closer to selling its headquarters and sharing new premises with fellow unions, BECTU - the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union - and GFTU - the General Federation of Trade Unions.
At the weekend, the NUJ’s national executive council voted in favour of a proposal from general-secretary. The hope is that the NUJ’s Headland House headquarters - near King’s Cross rail station, in London - could be sold for £4 million.
The NUJ’s share of new premises would be about £2 million and it would cost an estimated half-a-million pounds in moving and associated expenses. Later savings would include shared reception and post room staff.
The NUJ’s national executive council hopes to look at definite costs and any offers in October.
It is known some NUJ members are concerned that shared premises might lead to the unions choosing then to amalgamate.
