Spiked liked the words used in an apology given yesterday by the Scottish News of the World.

Says the paper, an article published last month may have given the inaccurate impression that the Scotland football manager, George Burley, had mentioned Scottish Football Association chief executive, Gordon Smith, in an interview and been critical of him.

There had been no mention. And the paper says it was ‘due to a production error’.

Code for a sub-editor’s over-fertile imagination, perhaps?
