Clype - The Column with More Spite than Spike (Pt2)
19/01/2007
It was fascinating to see the different newspaper coverage given to the 300th anniversary of the signing of the Act of Union. Clype confesses to a bit schizophrenia on the way The Scotsman handled it. The coverage was meaty, with a lot of work clearly having gone into getting quotes, on the Union, from some of the country’s great ‘n’ the good. But, then again, just too boring for words, perhaps? And it knows the nation is split on the wraparound cover.
And now the newspaper’s sending a van around the country, to vox pop ‘the people’ - very quaint, but perhaps better served by a Morris Traveller rather than a white van.
Meanwhile over at The Daily Record, despite two spreads investigating the great issue, the only leader we could find about national identity concerned the appalling situation in Australia where Serbs and Croats apparently can't agree on anything.
Still with The Record, Wednesday's Razz showbiz column suffered one of those irritating literals, common when copy is dictacted over the telephone. But the music venue, The Hammersmith 'Valley' (instead of Palais) would have at least suited Dunfermline's finest from the heyday of punk: The Skids (if you live in the US, listen to their Into the Valley hit here).
