Clype - The Column with More Spite than Spike (Pt1)
19/01/2007
Word emerges from Kinning Park that The Sun is selling more copies at 15p than it was at 10p (upto a fortnight ago) - all, of course, due to some rather slick promotions, like holidays for £9.50 and the SPL Panini stickers album.
One depressed insider at rival, the Daily Record's Central Quay said: "We used to own the Panini sticker book but we let it go this year and The Sun are just giving us a doing."
Meanwhile over at the SPL, Clype hears that bosses are upset with The Record for
punting an English Premiership sticker album as a spoiler to The Sun's Panini extravaganza.
None of which will bring any cheer to Mark Hollinshead, managing director of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. Before next week's conversion of Record PM to a freesheet he gave an interview to Steven Vass of the Sunday Herald. Asked whether his job was on the line he replied that his job would only be under threat when he ran out of ideas. Hmmmm...........
One of the ideas that has benefited The Record was the nearly one million pound advertising deal struck with the Scottish Executive last year by former TM wing man, Steve Sampson. And the benefits of the deal were clear for all to see this week.
While everyone else mocked Health Minister Andy Kerr for his £2.5 million campaign to teach people how to wash their hands, The Record ran a spread on the benefits of such a practice...........complete with a graphic on how to do it.
The Scotsman's editor, Mike Gilson, might well be overjoyed to have scooped a personal interview with PM-in-waiting, Gordon Brown, for Saturday's paper. But not everyone will have shared his delight. For one thing, doesn’t it slightly rubbish the notion that Scotsman editors should not be doing interviews with senior politicians, but instead taking tea with them on a regularly basis and telling them what bloody well needs doing, and now?
