Last King of Scotland First up Among the BAFTAs

12/02/2007
The first feature film made by Scots director, Kevin Macdonald, was the toast of the BAFTAs last night, picking up three awards last night.

First, up The Last King of Scotland was chosen ahead of Casino Royale, Notes on a Scandal, The Queen and United 93 to take The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

It then went on to pick up the prize for the best adapted screenplay and also the best actor award for Forest Whitaker.

Macdonald’s credits include Touching the Void and documentary Oscar winner, One Day in September.

In what was a good night for Scotland, Glasgow-set Red Road also won director, Andrea Arnold, the award for best director, writer or producer in their first feature film.

In her acceptance speech, she ‘thanked’ Glasgow - “which is a fantastic city”. She added that she believed money came with the award, which she said would be welcome, because her boiler had just packed in.

Scottish Screen board member, Iain Smith, will have enjoyed Children of Men - which he co-produced - picking up not one but two awards, for cinematography and production design.

  • "Best award of the night was Andrea Arnold's. An outstanding movie that deserves better bvox office and a brave one for Screen Scotland and Glasgow City Council to back. However, overall I think this was an overly parochial set of judgements. Paul Greengrass beats Martin Scorsese? Away with you. The Queen beats The Departed? Aye right!"
