Mail to Revert to Old Price?

02/03/2007
No sooner has the Daily Mail cut its price north of the border, but it looks like it is set to reverse it - no doubt, to the relief of rivals, such as The Scotsman.

While it seemed like the price drop, to 20p, might last until at least after the elections to the Scottish Parliament, Clype has since heard the cut will end today. And we are also reliably informed it was a short-term measure to bolster the national sales figures in London, which weren’t looking all that rosy.

Aye, you heard it right. Back to 40p on Monday, and last Saturday’s 50p version was an one-off.

Not that Steven Vass's analysis of the paper's fortunes in his media section in The Sunday Herald will have endeared him to many in the paper. A "hatchet job", said one. And in a curious twist, he was last Saturday evening, at the Press Fund Press Ball, sat at the table next to at least one, maybe two, being hosted by Mail sportswriters: who didn't come off too lightly in his analysis (published a few hours later), either.

  • "The Vass piece on the Daily Mail was worthy of a saucer of milk. Catty, devoid of any real insight and a dog's dinner of a read apparently aimed at settling old scores. Is he perchance a disgruntled employee"
