THE death last week (noted here) of Endell Laird, a former editor-in-chief of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, is marked by a full obituary – here – on the website of the Association of Mirror Pensioners.

It is penned by Tom Brown, a former assistant editor and columnist, the Daily Record and Sunday Mail newspapers – which are both published by Trinity Mirror.

And, today in The Scotsman, there is another impressive obituary, this time penned by former Scotsman editor, John McGurk, who begins: “Endell Laird, Scotland’s last great tabloid editor, ran more than just a newspaper. He ran a country.

“During the glory days of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, he was arguably a far more effective opposition to Mrs Thatcher than 50-odd Scottish Labour MPs, as demonstrated by numerous agenda-setting campaigns and investigations.”

BEGINS The Scotsman, on Saturday: “The Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland has hit out at a Highland regional newspaper which sacked two of its leading columnists in a row over freedom of speech.

“The Skye-based West Highland Free Press has fired its founding editor, Brian Wilson, along with the Free Church of Scotland Rev Professor of Theology, Donald Macleod, after the latter discussed the spread of Islam in the UK.”

FOR the sixth, consecutive month, the year-on-year circulation in Scotland of The Times newspaper has increased, according to the latest official figures.

Says newspapers auditing body, ABC, the average circulation in Scotland of the paper during last month was 19,247 – up 3.8 per cent on the average of 18,533 during June last year.

A COMPARISON is made between two interviews broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, on the website, Newsnet.scot.

It is between two interviews – one with Scottish Labour MP, Ian Murray; the other, with Deputy First Minister, John Swinney. Both are about last week’s Budget.

AND the Daily Business also reports: “Johnston Press chief executive, Ashley Highfield, is one of eight advisers appointed by the UK Culture Secretary to lead a review of the BBC.

“Mr Highfield, a former BBC executive and now head of the regional newspaper group that owns The Scotsman, is expected to raise concerns over the BBC website’s impact on local newspapers.”
