TV Placements Scheme Extended for Edinburgh Napier Students

A partnership that sees students from Edinburgh Napier University enjoy hands-on experience of working in the TV industry has been extended.

The deal involves STV and third and fourth-year students on the university's BA (Hons) Television course.

The partnership began a year ago.

Says a STV statement: “The refreshed initiative involves a comprehensive programme of studio visits, work shadowing opportunities, work placements and master classes. During work placements, the students will gain valuable, hands-on industry experience across multi media platforms including news, content, digital and post-production, in areas ranging from production, development and ideas pitching, to online editorial and technical operations.

“Key members of STV’s management team, including the Head of Production and Head of STV Creative, will act as mentors to fourth-year students during their final year, providing invaluable advice and guidance on university projects and future career opportunities. These students will also have the opportunity to compete for a coveted six-month internship at STV upon completion of the course.”

Adds STV’s chief executive, Rob Woodward: “I’m delighted that STV is renewing its partnership with Edinburgh Napier University to offer comprehensive industry support to the students and building on the success of our first year working together. It is important that we continue to strengthen our links with the education sector in Scotland and support the development of talent in the creative industries.”

Alistair Scott of Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Arts and Creative Industries is quoted, saying: “Links with the broadcasting industry are vital to the Edinburgh Napier University courses which are accredited as part of the Edinburgh Skillset Film and Media Academy.

“The on-going close partnership between our BA (Hons) Television course and STV provides great opportunities for students to gain insights into the dynamic and changing needs of television today. This new paid internship for a 2011 graduate demonstrates that our students have the skills required to get on the ladder for a career in the competitive world of working in TV.”
