Reporting Scotland Praised for its Use of Plain English

A campaign to encourage the use of plain English has chosen the BBC Scotland news flagship, Reporting Scotland, as a winner in its annual awards, to coincide with Plain English Day taking place today.

Reporting Scotland was picked out for its 'crystal-clear reporting', jointly with BBC Breakfast in the Best National TV Programme category.

The other winners were www.bupa.co.uk (web award), Korea Herald (international award), Daily Mail (daily national newspaper), York Press, (regional newspaper), ITV Granada Reports  (regional TV), BBC Radio 5 live 606 – Robbie Savage (national radio programme) and Rock Radio Manchester (regional radio station).

But last night at what were the 30th annual awards of the campaign, there were prizes too for the 'worst' uses of English, including for Argyll and Bute Council, NHS Lanarkshire and London Mayor, Boris Johnston – who was noted saying, in a press release about a bike hire scheme, a “cyclised city of pioneers”.
