BBC ALBA Launching on Freeview

The launch this evening on Freeview of the Gaelic-language digital TV channel, BBC ALBA, is being celebrated in Holyrood, with a Parliamentary reception being hosted by Margo MacDonald MSP.

BBC ALBA originally launched on Sky Freesat and then on the Virgin Media in the middle of May, and today will also occupy channel 8 on the Freeview listings.

Speaking to forargyll.com, MacDonald, independent MSP for Lothian, is quoted, saying: “‘This development should do more to persuade non-Gaelic-speaking Scots of the worth of the language and culture of the Gàidhealtachd than any previous attempt to promote understanding and appreciation of Gaelic’s rich heritage.

“Gaelic may be an old language but its contribution to contemporary culture will be greatly enhanced by its use of new technologies.”

BBC ALBA is available to view on Freeview, Freesat, SKy and Virgin Media from 17:00-00:00 on weekdays, 16:00-01:00 on Saturdays and 16:00-00:00 on Sundays.
