Your Noon Briefing: Promotions at The Scotsman, BBC trainee journalist wins NCTJ prize, the comma, etc

PROMOTIONS at The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday newspapers.

Kenny Farquharson has been named deputy editor of both The Scotsman and SoS, having previously been deputy editor of the latter. He succeeds Peter MacMahon, who recently joined ITV Border, as political editor.

As reported yesterday on allmediascotland.com, Kayt Turner is the picture editor across both titles.

The other promotions also apply across both titles: Alison Gray (assistant editor), Gillian Harris (news editor), Roger Cox (arts editor) and Tom Peterkin (political editor).

Cox succeeds Andrew Eaton-Lewis, who is understood to be developing various arts-related projects, while Harris succeeds former SoS news editor, Jeremy Watson, who is freelancing, including for The Times. Peterkin takes over from Eddie Barnes, who has joined – as reported here – the Scottish Conservatives.

BROADCASTING is among the top ten ‘battlegrounds’ of the upcoming vote on Scots independence – according to a TV programme shown on BBC Scotland last night.

AN outdoor advertising company has set up in Scotland for the first time.

Talon Outdoor will begin operating in Edinburgh, with it to be led by David Crawley, formerly marketing, business and client development director at BT Agilemedia.

AN Edinburgh-based media training ‘school’, operating out of Radio Forth, has been named among the winners at a business awards competition in the city.

Bauer Media’s Scottish Media Academy, which launched 18 months ago, won the Business Innovation category at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

Radio Forth is owned by Bauer Media. And the academy director is Courtnay McLeod, who blogs for allmediascotland.com.

NEWS that STV’s broadcasting licences have been renewed for a further ten years by broadcasting regulators, Ofcom – as noted in yesterday’s Noon Briefing – is understood to have resulted in a four per cent hike in the company’s share price.

Also writes Greig Cameron, in today’s Herald, the company’s “£70 million banking facility” has been automatically extended.

A TRAINEE journalist at BBC Scotland is one of two winners of excellence awards run by the journalism training body, the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

Calum Leslie – who graduated last year with an with a MA in multimedia journalism from Glasgow Caledonian University – secured the highest mark in the videojournalism-for-online in the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism.

Meanwhile, several NCTJ-accredited educational institutions in Scotland were present at the NCTJ’s annual student council, where they were able – says the NCTJ – “to quiz a panel of editors and the industry’s training body”.

Among those attending were Ryan Bounagui (Glasgow Caledonian University), Dominique Larkin (Glasgow Clyde College), Colin Robertson (Fife College), John Robertson (Robert Gordon University) and Katherine Sutherland (Glasgow Clyde College).
