Your Noon Briefing: .scot domain name, BBC local radio gender gap target ‘on course’, etc

WIDELY reported: a big take-up of the .scot domain name. Begins, for instance, STV (here): “More than 4,000 dot scot domain names were registered by members of the public within an hour of the domain becoming available.

“Jesus.scot and Oor Wullie.scot were among the first to be purchased from 2pm today.

“Amongst the other 1,500 domains snapped up in the first 60 seconds were Labour.scot, Braveheart.scot, the45percent.scot, Cocacola.scot and Facebook.scot. One customer registered 20 different .scot domains.”

REPORTS The Guardian, here: “The BBC has more than doubled the number of female breakfast show presenters on its local radio stations and says it is on course to hit a gender diversity target set by the director general by the end of the year.

“In August last year, [director-general] Tony Hall outlined his ambition for the corporation to have female presenters on 50 per cent of its 41 local radio breakfast shows across the English regions by the end of 2014. Since then the number has increased from eight to 17, with an 18th expected to be confirmed this month. This represents an increase from 20 per cent to 44 per cent.”

AN online petition calling on the broadcasting regulators, Ofcom, to ‘look into the activities and complaints of bias/governmental influence [concerning the BBC] around the Scottish independence referendum’ has seen a recent surge in numbers.

At the time of writing, the online petition had attracted over 80,000 ‘signatures’.
