Your Noon Briefing: Jackie Bird, Chris Roberts, etc

THE BBC Scotland news presenter, Jackie Bird, is celebrating 25 years in the role.

In an interview with her on the BBC website, it’s clear she had to be patient before being handed her first presenting shift, in 1989 – by which time she had built an impressive career via DC Thomson, The Sun, Radio Clyde and the Evening Times.

THE Daily Record’s Craig Swan leads tributes to his colleague, Chris Roberts, who has died, aged 39.

Begins Craig: “Chris covered boxing for Record Sport with the enthusiasm, expertise and rapier-like wit, which were his hallmarks.

“There was not one single individual who featured in his articles who had more courage and fighting spirit than the man himself.

“Aged just 39, Chris sadly lost his battle with cancer.”

A STUDENT at the University of Edinburgh has been shortlisted in an UK-wide student media awards competition.

Calum Macdonald – who has been featured here on allmediascotland.com – has been nominated in the Student Broadcast Journalist of the Year category of The Guardian Student Media Awards.

The winners will be announced on the 27th of next month.

BEGINS pressgazette.co.uk (here): “A new survey suggests newspapers played a bigger role in helping Scottish people decide how to vote in the referendum than social media and the campaigns themselves.

“Research carried out by YouGov for News UK found that 60 per cent of Scots relied on newspapers and their websites for the majority of their information on the independence debate.”

THE Daily Record newspaper is to continue being available in the Republic of Ireland – despite reports to the contrary.

Earlier this week, it was being suggested the paper was going to be no longer for sale in the Republic, on the back of an audited average circulation figure of less than 500.

And while copies will no longer being sent to the capital, Dublin, around 500 are to continue being available for sale, via Northern Ireland, in Donegal.

A spokesperson for the paper’s publishers, Media Scotland (an arm of Trinity Mirror), said: “We are glad to be able to correct those earlier reports. I can confirm over 500 copies of the Daily Record will still continue to be distributed in Donegal.”
