Your Noon Briefing: STV eye trio of Scots local TV licences, BAFTA Scotland Awards shortlist, etc

BEGINS an announcement from STV: “STV today confirmed it has submitted applications to [broadcasting regulators] Ofcom to deliver local TV in Aberdeen, Ayr and Dundee.

The applications have been submitted in partnership with Robert Gordon University and North East Scotland College in Aberdeen, the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) in Ayr, and Abertay University and Dundee and Angus College in Dundee.

STV launched Scotland’s first local TV station in Glasgow, delivered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University, on June 2.. STV Glasgow reaches a monthly audience of over 500,000 in Glasgow and the west, with 60 per cent of the transmission area tuning in since launch.

“STV Edinburgh will launch in early January 2015 in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.”

SEVERAL very well-known names among the country’s broadcasting, digital and filmmaking community feature in the shortlist of this year’s Scotland Awards run by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

The winners will be announced on the 16th of next month.

As always, the award winners will be announced at the Highlands and Islands Press Ball, which is taking place in Inverness on February 6.

WORK by Masters degree graduates from the Edinburgh-based Screen Academy Scotland is to be shown next week at the capital’s well-known Filmhouse cinema.

The event – taking place on Wednesday – features several short films, with tickets to attend available for free.

THE Scotland-based magazine designer, Matthew Ball, has been shortlisted in an UK-wide competition celebrating the best of ‘independent’ [aka modestly-sized] magazine publishers.

He has been nominated in the category, Designer of the Year, at the Independent Publisher Awards, run by the Professional Publishers Association.

The winners are announced on December 5.

BEGINS Scott Wright in The Herald: “[Digital design agency] Screenmedia has lifted the top prize at the 2014 Herald Digital Business Awards, which took place before an audience of more than 250 industry professionals at Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel last night.

“The Glasgow-based company was named digital agency of the year in recognition of its design strength, client base and continued growth.

“It was one of ten winners on the night, and overcame competition from Equator, LEWIS and Storm ID to take the overall title, sponsored by Enigma People Solutions.”
