MEDIA professionals and members of the public are being invited to a debate in Glasgow tomorrow evening – in the aftermath of last week’s attack by gunmen in Paris at the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

Being run by the NUJ Scotland and the about-to-launch website, CommonSpace, the debate will – say the organisers – “examine the challenges facing the media, free speech in the industry and explore editorial ethics within the context of a free press”.

Being chaired by NUJ Scotland organiser, Paul Holleran, panellists will include Alison Balharry, formerly of BBC World Service and Al Jazeera, and Angela Haggerty, editor of CommonSpace.

The event is free to attend, just turn up, at Oran Mor, Glasgow; 7pm start.

BEGINS Louise Sayers, on the BBC website (here): “The only paper to publically back independence saw a dramatic surge in circulation in the run up to the referendum.

“Sunday Herald sales stood at a weekly average of 31,795 in December 2014, up 31 per cent over the course of the year.

“Sister paper, The Herald, also saw a boost in sales during the referendum period.

“But managing editor of Herald & Times Group, Tom Thomson, said circulation for the titles had since ‘eroded’.”

BEGINS a story on the website (here) of the internet TV channel, Art in Scotland TV: “We’re celebrating 15 years of our arts-news archive with a series of compilation programmes. Arts-news began in 2000 as a way of providing short art and literature related news items for the local TV channels Edinburgh Television and Channel Six Dundee. Several of these short clips were combined into programmes.

“Our arts-news channels Summerhall TV, Art in Scotland TV and Writer Stories TV deliver short clips on contemporary art, literature and performances. Our sites are built upon an archive of almost 2000 film and TV clips that stretch back to the 1970s.”
