Your Noon Briefing: Scotland’s TV and film sector, Scottish Newspaper Society, etc

BEGINS STV: “Scotland is falling behind other parts of the UK and losing out on major television and film productions because of a lack of leadership in the industry, MSPs have been told.

THE website of the Scottish Newspaper Society has been revamped, announced, in part, by a couple of must-read blogs.

Director of the SNS, John McLellan – former editor of The Scotsman – writes about confidentiality being a bedrock of journalism, amid fears over police accessing phone records.

His blog can be read here.

The other blog (here) is by well-known lawyer, Campbell Dean, and headed: ‘Why social media needs a health warning’.

“Jens Henneberg, editorial director at Bonnier Publications in Denmark, told the Future Media Lab conference in Brussels that a confusing mix of different VAT rules on digital products across different EU member states was putting up ‘a big obstacle that has to be addressed’ – and that finding a solution was ‘critical’.

BEGINS the website, radiotoday.co.uk: “[Broadcasting regulator] Ofcom has started a consultation on the regulation of music in local analogue commercial radio formats.

“The radio regulator is wanting opinions from the industry to see if there should be a) No change to formats, b) Simplification of the formats of stations playing ‘mainstream popular music’ or c) Ofcom could allow licensees to request to change the music element of their format to be either genre-led or audience-led.”

SO, it appears to be back. The Sun’s Page 3 today carries an ‘apology’ on behalf of print and broadcast journalist for writing and talking about the seeming demise of its topless model pics: “Further to recent reports in all other media outlets, we would like to clarify that on Page 3 of today’s Sun is a picture of Nicole, 22, from Bournemouth.

“We would like to apologise on behalf of the print and broadcast journalists who have spent the last two days talking and writing about us.”

Among the various reactions, read here, in The Daily Telegraph.
