Your Noon Briefing: Daily Record, Johnston Press, etc

THE Daily Record has been named a winner at an awards ceremony celebrating the best of the UK-wide press.

The paper took the Sports Team prize at the Press Awards for 2014, which saw The Times named Newspaper of the Year.

As noted, here, the paper had earned four nominations.

Among the winners was former Scotsman editor, Rebecca Hardy – for Interview of the Year (popular newspapers).

And Scot, Fraser Nelson, was highly commended in the Columnist of the Year (broadsheet) category.

BEGINS The Guardian: “[Scotsman publisher] Johnston Press chief executive, Ashley Highfield, has warned that the number of full-time journalists working across the group’s local titles [which include several Scots local newspapers] will fall from its current figure of about 1,000.

“’The economics of this business means we will end up with fewer full-time journalists on our books,’ Highfield told the Digital Media Strategies conference in London. ‘What you end up with is a much more fluid model with contributors producing a larger percentage of the newspaper.'”

BEGINS publishers, DC Thomson: “The Scots Magazine’s April issue features a five-page interview with Sir David Attenborough in which he discusses his love of Scotland and warns of the dangers of global warming on Scotland’s ‘highly specialised’ wildlife.

“He also discusses the reintroduction of wolves to Scotland and cites the Bass Rock bird sanctuary as his favourite local filming moment.”
