Your Noon Briefing: Film and TV studio plan submitted, NUJ cyberbullying survey, etc

AN application has been lodged, with the aim of building a ‘world-class film and television production facility’ near Edinburgh.

Says a media release (here) issued yesterday: “PSL Land Ltd (PSLL) confirmed today that an application has been lodged for planning permission in principle for the unique mixed-use Studio development site at Straiton, near Edinburgh, with Midlothian Council.

“The 86-acre site will host a world-class film and television production facility incorporating six sound stages, an external water-stage, two backlots, workshops and production office spaces.

“Complementing the core studio campus will be a film academy and student residence, a visitor attraction and hotel.

“A data centre and satellite-link ‘earth station’, parking areas and an innovative CHP energy centre will support the future-proofed complex.”

BEGINS the National Union of Journalists (Scotland): “A survey into the extent of online abuse against journalists has revealed cases where reporters have feared for their own personal safety as a result of cyberbullying.

“Respondents referred to ‘death threats’ and the need to take additional security precautions when out and about and at home.

“Many spoke of damage to confidence and self-esteem and feelings of anger, stress and anxiety as a result of online abuse as a consequence of them doing their job as a journalist. In some cases it led to journalists retreating from use of social media and worrying about what stories to cover and how to report them.”

TAKE a bow, The Herald’s Daniel Sanderson, who scored a notable scoop yesterday, online: “It is the mystery that has dominated Scottish politics for months, inspired artwork and even sparked a copycat photo-op with Scottish Tory leader, Ruth Davidson.

“Just who was it that Alex Salmond was pictured feeding a Solero to back in 1999, and how did the picture come to be taken in the first place?

“But now the identity of ‘Solero girl’, as she has come to be known since the photograph went viral after resurfacing on irreverent website, Buzzfeed, and the inside story of that picture can finally be revealed.

“Kate Adamson, 33, spoke to The Herald from Melbourne, where she currently lives with her husband and two year-old daughter, explaining why she has proven so difficult to track down.”

REFLECTIONS on the recent annual conference of the Institute of Internal Communication… held in Brighton, at the weekend.

On the website of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (Scotland), Neil Jones writes: “I spent the last couple of days in Brighton at the Institute of Internal Communication annual conference.

“The theme this year was agile internal communications, but for me the two outstanding presentations were one on the attitudinal differences between generations and one internal comms specialist’s journey to becoming a trusted advisor and regular attendee at board meetings.”

BEGINS The Scotsman’s Martyn McLaughlin: “It is a fitting tribute to the Scot who put the snap, crackle and pop into social media with his popular series of offbeat videos.

“The Hollywood star Ryan Gosling has said his ‘heart goes out’ to the family and friends of Ryan McHenry, the Glasgow man who became an online sensation after posting video clips of the actor apparently refusing to eat cereal.

“Mr McHenry used the videos to highlight his own struggle with cancer before his death at the weekend at the age of 27.”
