HE’s a Dundee United fan, but Sunday Herald stringer, Philip Dorward, can expect to develop a soft spot for English Premiership football club, Tottenham Hotspur; after producing match reports for the newspaper from the Premiership for the past seven years years, he’s taking up the post of Spurs’ press boss.
Dorward has been freelancing for 14 years, initially working for The List magazine, doing music reviews. But in 1995, he started doing match reports and features for Scotland on Sunday. His switch to the Sunday Herald took place in 1999, three years after moving to London to work for a PR agency.
And that Monday-Friday PR/Saturday match reporting mix continued until June last year when he went full-time as a freelancer.
He takes up his new position on Monday and he’ll be in charge of liasion between the first team (manager and players) and the print and broadcast media.
He told Spike: “To use a football parlence, I’m gutted to be leaving the Sunday Herald. In the last ten years, I’ve worked with four terrific editors in Kevin McKenna, Donald Cowey, David Dick and Stephen Penman.
“I’ve been lucky to work for the Sunday Herald and truly believe our sports section could give any of the English Sunday broadsheets a run for their money, and certainly people like Natasha Woods, Alan
Campbell and Michael Grant have been terrific journalists to work with.
“I look forward to welcoming them to White Hart Lane when they can get a weekend off from the SPL.”
