The Southern Reporter is top Scottish weekly

AN annual competition celebrating the best in weekly newspapers resulted in only a modest haul of prizes being brought back, north of the border.

But it was to prove a pretty good night for Borders-based The Southern Reporter at the Weekly Newspaper Awards, hosted by the Newspaper Society last week.

As well as receiving Merit award in the Special Award, Paid-for Weekly Newspaper of the Year category, the paper also took the title, Best Paid-for Weekly Newspaper in Scotland – with Highly Commended in the same category going to Dunfermline Press and Merit going to Wee County News.

In the category, Best Supplement (Free Weekly Newspapers), Aberdeen Independent emerged triumphant for its Teen Times, which also earned it a Highly Commended in Newspaper Community Award (Free Weekly Newspapers).

And the Aberdeen Independent was a Highly Commended behind winner, East Kilbride Mail, in the Best Free Weekly Newspaper in Scotland section.

Overall, the Oxford Times was named Paid-for Weekly Newspaper of the Year, while Kent on Sunday won the Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year category.
