New look for P&J

THE Press and Journal newspaper, the morning title covering the north of Scotland, has a new look, from today.

In association with Edinburgh-based award-winning consultancy, Palmer Watson, the new look includes the introduction of fresh typefaces, design features and a new masthead.

The paper will retain its broadsheet format from Monday to Friday and compact format on a Saturday. It is the first major change to the look of the paper in eight years.

P&J editor, Derek Tucker, says the intention of the re-design was to retain the traditional qualities of the paper but with a fresh look.

Features include a much larger body text, to make the paper easier to read, and a more lively and accessible layout.

Says Tucker: “I wanted a design which combined modern typefaces with the ability to allow rapid changes through the editions. The seven editions we produce to ensure that the entire north of Scotland has a local daily newspaper are crucial to our continued success and that was uppermost in our minds throughout the whole redesign process.”

The new design features a combination of the Serif Display and Sans fonts, several varieties of which will be exclusively used by the P&J in the UK.

Palmer Watson have worked on several leading newspapers around the globe with recent projects including the world-renowned French daily, Le Monde, and AD, a multi-edition daily title in the Netherlands.

The P&J is now Britain’s fourth-largest regional newspaper, with only evening titles in Wolverhampton, Liverpool and Manchester selling more copies.
