Entries invited for picture editors’ awards

A CALL has been for entries to arguably the UK’s top press photography competition – the Picture Editors’ Awards.

After teetering on the brink of extinction, the awards managed to find enough financial backing to proceed this year and is celebrating with the establishment of new categories.

But because of the uncertainty surrounding whether the awards would even take place, the deadline for entries is Sunday.

The awards recognise and reward the very best in photographic journalism throughout the UK and also Ireland; the winners are chosen by a ballot of picture editors across the British Isles.

Sponsors include the City of London, Fujifilm, and Getty Images, plus Action Images, Olympus, picturehouse and B+W, Lowepro and Manfrotto.

The awards ceremony is the 20th of next month.

The new categories are Foreign News Photographer of the Year, Nature and the Environment Photographer of the Year, and Sports Picture of the Year.

There are also two additional newspaper awards: for best newspaper website and best news website.

Entries required to have be taken between January 1 last year and Saturday just past.
