Weekly newspaper awards triumph for D&G Standard

THE Dumfries and Galloway Standard and the East Kilbride Mail were the main Scottish winners at the Weekly Newspaper of the Year Awards.

The awards, run by the Newspaper Society, saw the Tamworth Herald take the main, UK prize in the paid-for category and Kent on Sunday similarly victorious in the free weekly paper category.

In the Scotland-only sections, the D&G Standard triumphed in the paid-for category, with the East Kilbride Mail taking the honours in the free one. Silver and bronze in the paid-for category went to Wee County News and the Southern Reporter; while in the race for the free weekly title, second place went to the Aberdeen Independent, with third going to the Allanwater News.

Elsewhere, it was a Scottish one-two-three in the Supplement or Section of the Year category among the free weeklies, with top prize going to the Aberdeen Independent, second place going to the East Kilbride Mail and bronze going to the Aberdeen Citizen.
