Scotsman says sorry to reader

THE Scotsman has apologised to a reader who complained about an in-paper promotional campaign.

Deputy editor, Ian Stewart, who also acts as the newspaper’s Readers’ Ombudsman, explained in his weekly column: “I received complaints over a promotional campaign in the paper that linked the Scotland-England rugby international to a book on Saturday.

“It said: ‘Bannockburn, 1314, there was blood. Next Saturday 15.15, there will be blood’.

“Gillian Woodman complained that it stirred up anti-English hatred. It was meant very tongue-in-cheek and I don’t believe it did stir up hatred, but it probably is a mindset we should move away from. Sorry.”

Meanwhile, there have been a few changes at The Scotsman business desk. Peter Ranscombe, currently editorial assistant, becomes a business reporter, and Alice Ross is joining from Money Management, part of the FT Group, as business correspondent.
