ONE of The Herald newspaper’s most decorated writers has decided to accept voluntary redundancy, as the paper’s owners seek to axe 20 editorial posts.
Michael Tierney is a two-times winner of the ‘Feature writer of the year’ title at the British Press Awards. He has also won its Scottish equivalent three times in a row.
The job cuts are to be across The Herald and sister titles, the Sunday Herald and the Evening Times, and are the latest in a series over the last few years.
It is understood Tierney is to take some time off, to consider his next move, which may not be in writing.
Last year, staffed staged a number of walk-outs – led by the National Union of Journalists – when a colleague faced compulsory redundancy.
The deadline for applications for voluntary redundancy was Friday.
Also believed to have accepted voluntary redundancy are Isobel Palmer, previously editor of the Going Out section, and picture researcher, Eva Mutter.
