Double-digit sales drops for Sunday Herald and SoS

BOTH the Sunday Herald and Scotland on Sunday newspapers registered double-digit percentage drops in sales between March last year and last month.

According to the ABCs, the two titles registered year-on-year sales – as measured by Average Net Circulation – in Scotland of 11.3 per cent down for Scotland on Sunday and 17.5 per cent down for the Sunday Herald.

Translated, a decrease of 7,650 (from 67,681 during March last year to 60,031 last month) for SoS and a decrease of 6,674 (from 49,544 during March last year to 40,870 last month) for the Sunday Herald.

Meanwhile, the year-on-year figures for Scotland’s two biggest-selling daily newspapers were both down: 6.4 per cent for the Scottish Sun and 9.87 per cent for the Daily Record.

The figures were published on Friday. Only two newspapers saw their year-on-year sales rise in Scotland, from March last year: the Daily Star and the Sunday Times Scotland.

Other big year-on-year fallers in Scotland include The Independent on Sunday (27.3 per cent) and the Sunday Mirror (18.4 per cent).

The figures read, across the board, as follows:

Daily Mirror (28,181 in March 2009 versus 32,818 in March 2008, down 4,637 or 14.1 per cent), Daily Record (329,067 versus 365,090, down 36,023 or 9.87 per cent), Daily Star (88,572 versus 85,745, up 2827 or 3.3 per cent), Sun (372,439 versus 397,806, down 25,367 or 6.4 per cent), and Daily Express (72,097 versus 75,878, down 3781 or five per cent).

Daily Mail (117,833 versus 125,839, down 8,006 or 6.4 per cent), Daily Telegraph (23,159 versus 23,648, down 489 or 2.1 per cent), Financial Times (5,004 versus 5435, down 431 or 7.9 per cent), The Herald (59,329 versus 66,261, down 6,932 or 10.5 per cent), The Guardian (15,627 versus 16,135, down 508 or 3.15 per cent), and The Independent (8,905 versus 9,883, down 978 or 9.9 per cent).

The Scotsman (48,011 versus 51,850, down 3,839 or 7.4 per cent), The Times (27,009 versus 27,958, down 949 or 3.4 per cent ), Daily Star Sunday (28,172 versus 29,180, down 1,008 or 3.45 per cent), News of the World (268,321 versus 290,914, down 22,593 or 7.77 per cent), and Sunday Mail (408,753 versus 450,880, down 42,127 or 9.31 per cent).

Sunday Mirror (24,450 versus 29,980, down 5,530 or 18.4 per cent), The People (18,088 versus 20,875, down 2,787 or 13.35 per cent), Sunday Express (41,434 versus 43,512, down 2,078 or 4.8 per cent), Sunday Post (248,062 versus 272,424, down 24,362 or 8.9 per cent), and Mail on Sunday (100,303 versus 111,553, down 11,250 or 10.1 per cent).

Independent on Sunday (7088 versus 9,753, down 2,665 or 27.3 per cent), The Observer (22,198 versus 23,105, down 907 or 3.9 per cent), Scotland on Sunday (60,031 versus 67,681, down 7,650 or 11.3 per cent) and Sunday Herald (40,870 versus 49,544, down 8,674 or 17.5 per cent).
