Redundancy reprieve for reporter

AMONG those facing compulsory redundancy at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail newspapers, there has been an 11th hour reprieve for at least one journalist.

As a result of a late, accepted application for voluntary redundancy, the Daily Record was able to offer its sports writer, Tony Haggerty, the opportunity to ‘return to the fold’.

Last month, the papers announced 24 compulsory job losses as part of a plan to cull up to 70 posts (the remainder being taken up by voluntary redundancies), following a merging of production.

It prompted a series of walkouts, led by the National Union of Journalists, the most recent being just over a week ago, lasting three days.

allmediascotland.com understands that talks between the NUJ and management have since been – says at least one insider – “positive”.
