Final tests loom for Gaelic TV channel plan

A FINAL scrutiny of a plan to launch a dedicated TV channel for Gaelic language programmes is to begin in a fortnight’s time.

One of the partners in the planned digital channel, the BBC, has announced it will conduct a ‘public value test’ of the plan, from the 16th. Also taking place will be a ‘market impact assessment’, being conducted by broadcasting regulators, Ofcom.

The BBC test was announced yesterday by the BBC Trust, the organisation that recently replaced the Corporation’s board of governors and which has a much more scrutinising role than its predecessor body.

Should the BBC Trust and Ofcom hurdles be successfully dealt with, the new channel is expected to be up and running by March next year. A decision on whether the channel goes ahead or not is expected by December 19.
