stv celebrates 50th birthday

FIFTY years ago today, stv was launched, from Glasgow’s Theatre Royal, with a 60-minute “cavalcade of Scottish humour, literature, song and dancing”, presented by the actor, James Roberston Justice. Some 750,000 people tuned in.

And during the course of the next 12 months, stv will be broadcasting three programmes looking back on the station’s history, with one devoted to sport – its Scotsport programme being the longest-running of its type in the world.

Says Bobby Hain, head of Broadcasting: “Turning 50 is a fantastic achievement and over the next year we’ll be celebrating all the talent, innovation and creativity that has come out of stv over the past 50 years.

“stv has produced a number of brilliant and significant programmes during its lifetime, which is a real testament to every member of staff who has worked here since we first went on air in 1957.

“We’re incredibly proud of our heritage and are now looking ahead to even more fantastic programming and making stv the most influential, relevant and innovative media brand in Scotland.”
