Ofcom expected to approve Border news reduction as part of PSB review

PLANS to reduce the dedicated ITV news service for the Scottish Borders, and south towards Carlisle, are expected to receive the backing of the broadcasting regulators, Ofcom.

ITV want to amalgamate its Border news operation with its Newcastle-upon-Tyne one – where the new service would be based.

And following a review of ‘public service broadcasting’ (PSB) by Ofcom – details of which will emerge today – that wish is likely to be recommended by Ofcom, as part of a wider approval that ITV reduces its PSB obligations.

The common argument against PSB is that it costs a lot to make compared to its ratings, and that – with the so many digital channels now available – it’s not so easy to find the advertising revenue to pay for it.
