Cultural Cliche Cuts Deep

A film promoting the virtues of Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester as possible locations for independent TV production companies thinking of setting up an office outside of London, had Scottish indie champion, Stuart Cosgrove, clearly annoyed.
At the Edinburgh International TV Festival over the weekend, the Director
(Nations and Regions) for Channel 4 and host of BBC Radio Scotland’s Off the Ball show was on a panel discussing the virtues of not being based in London.
The film, presented by TV’s A Place in the Sun host, Amanda Lamb, and styled along similar lines as the Channel 4 programme, looked at the likes of property prices and talent pool in each of the cities.
But what appeared to irritate Cosgrove, along with a good few members of the audience, was that tiresome cultural cliche that Glasgow is home to the……….deep-fried Mars Bar.
The film’s makers, a Birmingham-based indie, clearly don’t know the DFMB is a Stonehaven invention.
