Media Job: Content officer, International Network of Street Papers

INSP’s content officer will work with our team to develop and deliver the INSP Hub and contribute to our overall communications and member support strategies.

The INSP Hub is an online resource platform for street paper staff. It provides a range of resources, toolkits and information to street papers to build their capacity and increase their sales – so that tens of thousands of homeless vendors can earn a living and improve their lives.

The INSP Hub includes the ‘News Service’ – an unique news wire that provides editorial content and support to street papers around the world.

This is a challenging and varied opportunity for an individual with excellent editing and administrative skills, a good grasp of social media and a keen interest in social justice. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team-player, with a good understanding of how their work fits into the broader mission of INSP.

Main duties

Copy-editing and content management:

* Proactively source a wide range of editorial content from the street paper network;

* Select supplementary editorial content from external media partners;

* Copy-edit editorial content to increase quality, appeal and relevance for an international audience;

* Upload articles and images to INSP’s websites; and

* Monitor and analyse service usage data and member feedback, to inform editorial decisions.

Member support and communication:

* Manage and deal with enquiries relating to member access to the INSP Hub;

* Work with colleagues to ensure quality control and variety of content on the INSP Hub;

* Analyse member usage data of the INSP Hub to inform content development decisions;

* Promote and support member participation in all INSP projects (including the News Service; Global Street Paper Summit; INSP Awards; and #VendorWeek);

* Manage the entry process and communications for the annual INSP Awards;

* Liaise with colleagues to ensure contact lists and member data are kept up to date through SalesForce; and

* Perform any other duties as required by the operations manager.

Content production and copywriting:

* Write copy for INSP projects, event programmes and publications;

* Write copy and teasers for resources on the INSP Hub and News Service:

* Source and write stories and/or content for, the INSP Hub and the News Service:

* Conduct and write regular interviews with street paper staff and vendors;

* Write content for social media, optimising for maximum engagement; and

* Monitor member communications to identify themes and topics for INSP features.

Terms of employment:

* Reports to: operations manager;

* Salary: £20,000 per annum pro rata (and up to five per cent matched contribution to pension);

* Location: INSP office, central Glasgow;

* Hours of work: Part-time – 22.5 hours per week (three days). INSP operates a flexitime policy (subject to project and organisational needs) with core hours of 10am – 4pm. The editorial and content officer may occasionally be required to work during evenings or weekends (time off in lieu can be claimed in such instances);

* Contract period: one year, with a view to extending subject to organisational strategy and funding;

* Probationary period: There will be an initial probationary period of three months (during which time statutory rights apply);

* Holiday entitlement: Equal to 31 days per year, including bank holidays (pro rata) increasing to 34 days after two years of service (pro rata); and

Person specification:


* A professional qualification in journalism or a relevant discipline;

* Experience in sub-editing and/or copy-editing;

* Meticulous attention to detail, including factual accuracy, grammar and spelling;

* Excellent written communication skills, with an ability to adapt to different audiences;

* Confidence communicating on the phone and in person;

* Excellent sense of what makes a good story;

* Strong knowledge of media law;

* Strong knowledge and experience of social media and digital communication;

* Excellent organisational, administrative and time management skills;

* Ability to work independently, flexibly and creatively;

* High level of IT literacy (including content management systems);

* Energetic and motivated approach to work:

* A positive attitude and a commitment to being a key player in a strong and successful team;

* Flexibility to work out with office hours and undertake periods of travel if required (very occasional);

* Ability to build and maintain a network of contacts; and

* Good interviewing skills.


* Skills in photography and/or video recording and editing;

* Experience in using CRM and/or databases;

* An understanding of and interest in issues around homelessness and social exclusion;

* Experience in working in an international or cross-cultural context; and

* Skills in a second language.
