Local care home backs ambitions of Dementia Awareness Week

WITH over 800,000 people in the UK already living with dementia, and estimates suggesting that over 1,000,000 will be affected by the condition within ten years, a local care home is seeking to highlight the issue during Dementia Awareness Week 2015 (18-24 May).

On Saturday 23 May, the Westerton Care Home in Maxwell Avenue, Bearsden, will host an Afternoon Tea to mark the week, giving visitors an insight into what life and living with dementia is like and demonstrate how its award-winning manager, Joan Fraser, and her dedicated team care for their 87 residents, many of whom live with the condition.

Joan Fraser comments: “We are firmly committed to supporting our residents and their families through all stages of ageing; including dementia care.

“Our programme at Westerton ensures that we continue to give our residents as much independence as they can, together with supporting their day-to-day life through engagement and activities such as gardening, golfing, singing activities and working with Alzheimer’s Scotland in their Football Memories project.

“Looking to the future, we believe everyone operating within our sector should set about changing this, so that every care home in Scotland has the ability to support for those living with dementia, because it is a condition which is sadly only set to rise.”

On the website of his organisation, here, Neil Hunt, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Society, is quoted, as saying: “One in three people over 65 will end their life with a form of dementia and many will spend their final years in a care home.

“Our Putting Care Right campaign is about ensuring people with dementia get access to quality care.

“This means compulsory dementia training for all staff and tougher inspection and regulation systems.

“It also means challenging our views and raising expectations of care for people with dementia in care homes.”

Due to the nature of our environment, an appointment is necessary to attend this free event, please call 0141 942 5834 or via the website www.westertoncarehome.com.
