Media Release: Dance fans flock to street dance battles

Flawless Central Station

DANCERS and dance fans from across Scotland are being invited to get involved in a day-long flurry of free activity in and around St. Enoch ahead of the Tenth UDO World Street Dance Championships, which will land in the city’s SECC at the end of the month.

With Glasgow fast becoming the global home of street dance, St. Enoch Square and Centre will be transformed into a hip-hop style battle ground on Thursday, 6th August, as part of a unique street dance event in the city.

Not just for street dance enthusiasts; locals, friends and families with an interest in dance will have the chance to witness a host of performances throughout the day and meet a number of exciting acts including famous Scottish boy band, Rewind.

The pop-up UDO qualifier will see passers-by given the chance to win Dance Show LIVE! tickets, prizes from stores including St. Enoch Centre, H&M and Tesco, meet and greets with stars such as Jake Quickenden, and UDO-branded hoodies and t-shirts.

The free event is set to give the people of Glasgow a flavour of what will be on offer when the street dance extravaganza Dance Show LIVE! comes to Glasgow on Sunday, 30th August. This event will feature a packed programme of workshops, industry master-classes and celebrity performances across a variety of dance genres.

For one day only this week, dancing hopefuls will also have a final chance to qualify for the UDO World Street Dance Championships.

Judged by Britain’s Got Talent dance troupe, Flawless, talented Scottish dancers are invited to bring their very best moves to St. Enoch and compete head-to-head against other rival Scottish street dancers for the all-important final slots at the world-renowned competition which will take place at the SECC from Friday 28th until Sunday 30th August.

UDO-accredited judges, Flawless, will also wow with a show-stopping performance of their own and meet attendees, before selecting the lucky dancers who have impressed most. These talented performers will be honoured with their own sky-high trophies on the St. Enoch stage.

The Scottish talent will then go on to join 6,000 other dancers from 30 countries across the world that have come through UDO World Street Dance Championships Qualifier competitions in countries like Japan, Australia and Canada, over the last year.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “With Glasgow now just weeks away from hosting the UDO World Street Dance Championships and Dance Show LIVE!, this exciting event marks the start of the final countdown to a weekend of dance.

“The Final Battles is a fantastic chance for dancer-lovers, families and locals to come along and get involved in a show-stopping event right in the heart of city.

“Glasgow has an enviable reputation for delivering major events and with free entry and hours of fun dance activity planned throughout the day, the city will certainly demonstrate that it is the home of world street dance.”

Anne Ledgerwood, general manager at St. Enoch Centre, said: “We are delighted to host the UDO World Street Dance Championships dance battles at St. Enoch and are looking forward to welcoming Flawless, Rewind and the dance crews to the centre.

“Glasgow is once again on the world stage and St. Enoch Centre is proud to play its part in showcasing the appeal and vibrancy of the city to an international audience.”

Simon Dibley, chief executive of the United Dance Organisation (UDO), said:This unique qualifying event is a fantastic opportunity for ambitious Scottish dance crews to secure a coveted place in the world’s largest and most prestigious street dance competition.

“We’re very much looking forward to seeing the extraordinary talent hiding in plain sight in Scotland. With our tenth World Street Dance Championships being hosted in Glasgow at the end of the August, this is the ideal place to host our final qualifier.

“The event is set to be an explosion of fun, and with so much going on throughout the day, we would encourage dance fans of all abilities to come down and join us on the day.”

The UDO World Street Dance Championships Final Battle will take place at St Enoch Square and St Enoch Centre from 11am to 5pm on Thursday, 6th August.

The UDO World Street Dance Championships will take place at the SECC from Friday to Sunday, August 28-30.
