Media Release: New book – Oil Strike North Sea

Oil Strike North Sea1

FROM the front line of oil exploration, geologist, Mike Shepherd, gives an authentic account of how oil and gas exploration developed in the North Sea from the 1960s to the present day.

Oil Strike North Sea: A First-hand History of North Sea Oil is a powerful book that brings home the immensity of the challenge involved and celebrates an extraordinary triumph of engineering and science on this new frontier of knowledge – before the North Sea fields, oil had never before been extracted at such depths, or in such stormy waters.

A geologist specialising in getting the most out of oil fields, Shepherd has been involved in the search for new fields and assessment of their viability for most of the major oil companies.

He conveys the excitement of the North Sea oil venture as new technologies and methods of engineering were developed to meet unprecedented challenges and difficulties. He also discusses the impact of oil on his home city of Aberdeen.

Oil Strike North Sea reflects on all aspects of people’s experience in the industry: from the effect and aftermath of the Piper Alpha disaster, the courage with which Shetland Council negotiated a good deal for its community, to the way negotiations are handled between the UK and Norway.

Says a spokesperson: “There is not another book on the subject as comprehensive, pertinent or insightful.”
