£1.5m ‘Powering the Future’ exhibition prepares to shed light on critical energy issues

AS Britain prepares to turn on the Christmas lights, Glasgow Science Centre is counting down to the launch of one of the most ambitious events ever mounted in the UK on energy use – Powering the Future.

Focusing on the future of energy supply in the UK, the exhibition, which launches on 10 December, aims to raise awareness of the science and technology underpinning the critical issues related to the future of energy supply.

Using a series of 60 thought-provoking interactive exhibits, Glasgow Science Centre will invite members of the public to think about how we can meet our ever-growing demands on the energy sector at both an acceptable economic and environmental cost.

The exhibition’s content has been carefully designed to ensure that it’s an enjoyable and engaging experience for all age groups.

Visitors to Powering the Future will discover where the power comes from when they switch on a light or fill up the tank of their car.

From feeling the force of wind in a hurricane booth, using winches to race Scalextric, piloting an underwater ROV and generating power in a dance-off, visitors will learn about the diverse ways we can harness energy and recognise the benefits and limits of different sources.

Dr Stephen Breslin, chief executive of Glasgow Science Centre, said: “Powering the Future will play a pivotal role in raising public awareness of how critical energy availability is.

“It will demonstrate the extent to which energy underpins our lives, day in – day out, and hopes to engage the public in considering ideas and concepts as to how we as society might seek to deliver a secure, affordable and cleaner energy future that guarantees we keep the lights on.

“Highlighting the importance of how we approach power generation both now and in the future is an issue that affects everyone, everywhere – young and old. Illustrating how different energy technologies can be mixed to meet increasing demands in a way that is tangible, entertaining and engaging is central to our message in Powering the Future.

“Never before has one exhibition attempted to engage the public on such a scientifically and technologically challenging, yet vitally important, subject.

“By making the science relevant, we hope to spark an interest in the next generation to understand their role in coming up with the best ways to approach balancing carbon emissions, energy costs, and security of energy supply – ultimately bringing the challenges around the energy trilemma to life.”

Professor Philip Nelson, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s chief executive, said: “The UK and the world face significant energy challenges.

“We have to produce enough energy to meet demand while reducing energy waste and our environmental impact, and we need to maintain a secure energy supply. Powering the Future will help the public recognise the complex situation we face with energy supply and the need for an energy mix.

“We need to ensure we have a supply of talented young scientists, engineers and industrialists who can develop solutions to meet our energy challenges in times to come. This exhibition will inspire young people to take an active interest.”
