UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE) has provided a five-figure investment to Glasgow-based washable nappy brand, Tots Bots, to fund the move to its new larger premises allowing the company room to expand and to employ more staff.

UKSE, the Tata Steel subsidiary, set up to help growing companies operating in former steel producing areas develop, boost the local economy and create jobs, has been providing ongoing backing to this award-winning firm since 2010.

Established in 2001, Tots Bots Ltd design, manufacture, distribute and retail their own brand of re-usable cloth nappies and associated products. This family-run firm is now a market leader in the UK re-usable and eco-friendly baby products market.

The brand is stocked in big-chain stores Boots and Tesco as well as a number of independent retailers in the UK, which is supplied and distributed from its new 20,000 sq. ft. premises in the east end of Glasgow; double the size of its previous factory.

Tots Bots managing director, Magnus Smyth, said: “The support from UKSE has been invaluable in growing our business. It has always been important to us to be made in Scotland and the backing of UKSE has helped us stay here and nurture the business.

“We now have working capital to activate our growth plans which will see us expand the business and recruit local talent. The boost to our workforce, will put us in a prime position to compete in the global market.”

Scott Webb, UKSE regional executive for Scotland, added: “Husband and wife team, Magnus and Fiona Smyth, have grown the company from a start-up at their kitchen table to a significant local employer. They know the business and their customers inside out. This is exactly the type of business that we are excited about supporting.

“UKSE saw their enthusiasm and expansion strategy as an excellent opportunity to invest in a Scottish company with a huge growth potential and a commitment to training and developing staff.”

This year, UKSE is celebrating 40 years of supporting economic regeneration and the development of areas in the UK which have been affected by changes in the steel industry.

In that time, more than £23 million has been invested in Scotland alone, helping over 1,447 businesses to create more than 17,000 jobs. It also supports local communities and to date has given more that £1 million to communities groups.
