The 2016 Chinese New Year celebration beginning a new cultural tradition in the city will take place Friday, February 5 between the hours of 12:00pm and 4:00pm with a traditional Lion Dance taking place at 1:00pm and an official event opening at 1:15pm.

LOCALMOTIVE Markets and Edinburgh’s Waverley Station will be hosting a 2016 Chinese New Year celebration, which encapsulates the year of the Fire Monkey.

Begins a spokesperson: “This 2016 Chinese New Year Celebration is important for LocalMotive Markets as it aims to bring the Chinese culture to the forefront of the Edinburgh community as a way of exposing and educating local people to the wonderful diverse culture of some of Edinburgh’s current businesses and residents.

“LocalMotive Markets has a vision of making this year’s celebration event a stepping stone to a continuing tradition honoring the Chinese community within Edinburgh.”

Consul General for China in Edinburgh, Pan Xinchun, wishes the event a great success and station manager, Juliet Donnachie, says: “This event bringing Chinese culture to Waverley reflects our enthusiasm to provide a platform for local as well international community events. We are delighted Waverley Market is reopening for 2016 with these great Chinese New Year celebrations.”

As a part of the Waverley Market re-opening, the celebration will take place inside the station by Platform 2.

The event is entirely free of charge, which also includes several hands on activities and performances for both adults and children. Handmade arts and crafts, snacks and drinks will also be available for purchase from both the Chinese community and the broad range of traders that are part of the weekly Waverley Market.

LocalMotive Markets exists to bring the variety, passion, and creativity of small local businesses under one roof at Edinburgh Waverley Station as well as going hand in hand with the recent Borders Railway expansion, making it easily accessible for small business owners to travel into Edinburgh and sell their local products.

Tania Pramschufer, organiser of the market and this event, said: “It made great sense to reopen the market with a Chinese New Year celebration, we are delighted we have had so much support from the Chinese community across Edinburgh.

“And we are feeling excited to welcome The Lion Dance to Waverley Market as well all the other activities.”

This event has been made possible through partnerships with Hand Up Events,
Ricefield and Yees Hung Ga Kung Fu and with support from The Confucius Institute for Scotland.
