A PHOTOGRAPHER who has spent more than two decades covering news, sport, features and entertainment for The Independent and The Independent on Sunday, is launching the first in a series of courses and workshops located on a small Hebridean island.
Colin McPherson, a Scottish photographer based in the north-west of England, will lead the first courses which will be held on Easdale island, Argyll in September, 2016.
The short courses are aimed at people who love photography and want to take their practice to a new level.
Using the island as his inspiration, McPherson will help participants explore what makes great photographs and how to take them.
Explains McPherson: “Easdale island is a stunning and unique location on Scotland’s west coast: it is car-free, has 65 permanent inhabitants, a pub and award-winning restaurant and is famous for being the historic centre of Scotland’s slate mining industry.
“These days, it hosts the annual World Stone Skimming Championships in one of the island’s disused quarries. Access to the island is by passenger ferry, and all the participants will stay on Easdale for the duration of the courses.”
McPherson is a member of the Document Scotland collective and is currently exhibiting work at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
Commenting on this new venture, McPherson added: “I am delighted to be able to lead this course. It is set in a stunning location, which I hope will inspire people to understand ways to take great photographs. The courses are aimed at amateur, semi- and professional photographers and my aspiration is to create a relaxed, fun and stimulating atmosphere for participants to learn, enjoy and share their work.”
It will be the first in a series of courses to be held on the island, the aim being to share the knowledge and experience of gifted practitioners to help participants re-set creatively and to give them the opportunity to explore new ways of seeing and making photographic images.
A full programme of photography and other courses hosted by Easdale Experiences Ltd on the island in 2017 will be announced in the coming months.
